WONDER EYES PREOJCT

Home >  project >  East Timor 2000

In 2000, when I visited East Timor just after the conflict, the eyes of the children were shining brilliantly, even though it was under the circumstances like the almost all the building were burned and destroyed and many stories of human cruelty were told. These children seemed a treasure of our future. Then, I tried a photo workshop with the 100 children, bringing 100 instant cameras with me (this was the first of Wonder Eyes Project), at the capital Dili, eastern village Tutuala, the border southwest Suai. The photos they took for the first time were marvelous and made lots of people moved (by hikaru nagatake)

Photo workshop done in 2000 August, at three places : Dili(Capital), Tutuala(eastern village) and Suai (western city near the border with Indonesia). The local people, photographers, public officers and chief of each area collaborated. Selected by local people, a total of 101 children, from 7 to 15 year old of age, participated.

Special acknowledgement is made to the supports provided by Konica Co. Ltd., Canon, Co.Ltd., JICA, International Development Journal, Wonder Art Production.

Photo Exhibition in East Timor:

The exhibition in East Timor was held from November 29 to December 18, 2000, at three places at which the program was done:

--Dili : the National Culture Center in Dili(Nov.29-Dec.8);

--Tutuala : a primary school at Tutuala (Dec.9-10);

-- Suai : Peace and Reconciliation Center of Suai (Dec.17-18).

All the exhibition and the events were very well received. In addition to the supports from KONICA and CANON, support and collaboration were provided locally and internationally from such institutions and groups as: JICA-Dili, UNTAET/Education, National Culture Center of Timor, UNTAET-Suai(Governor of Covalima), CARE Int'l-East Timor, Instituto Camoes, Timorense photographers and local and international volunteers. The exhibitions were covered by the UNTAET-radio, the News agencies of Portugal and Macao, etc. The children received the prints of all the photos they took, and all the photos exhibited were donated to the National Cultural Center through UN Education in December, 2000, which was highly appreciated as all those photos were precious documents of a special era witnessing the birth of a nation.
